What are the advantages of aspartame over sugar?

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used as a sugar substitute in many foods and drinks. Compared with sugar, aspartame has a number of advantages:

- Fewer calories: aspartame has a very low calorie content (around 4 calories per gram), but being around 200 times sweeter than sugar, a much smaller amount is needed to achieve the same level of sweetness, which significantly reduces calorie intake.

- Weight control: because of its low calorie content, aspartame can help control weight, particularly for people looking to reduce their sugar and calorie intake.

- Suitable for diabetics: aspartame has a very low glycaemic index, which means it does not significantly affect blood sugar levels. It is therefore considered safe for people with diabetes.

- Prevention of tooth decay: unlike sugar, aspartame does not contribute to the formation of tooth decay, as it is not fermentable by the oral bacteria that transform sugars into acids.

Aspartame has been the subject of controversy due to concerns about its safety. However, health authorities such as the FDA in the United States and EFSA in Europe have concluded that aspartame is safe for human consumption within established limits. As with any food or ingredient, it is recommended that aspartame be consumed in moderation and that the acceptable daily intake be respected.
