Originally from the Balkans, the Horse Chestnut tree is a majestic ornamental tree commonly found in public gardens (20 to 30 m high). The fruit is a spiny capsule containing the globular seed, which is harvested in September and October.
The horse chestnut tree was acclimatised to France for ornamental purposes in the 17th century. The fresh seeds of this species have been used in phytotherapy since the end of the last century. Some old wives' remedies have survived the centuries. Keeping one or two chestnuts in your pocket, and replacing them when they become hard, can ward off rheumatism!
Originally from North America, Witch Hasel is a shrub that has been cultivated in Europe on deep, acidic soils. It is similar in appearance to the hazelnut tree, and is also known as Witch Hazel. The leaves, which can grow up to 15 cm long, turn dark red as they dry.
Originally used by the Indians, it was discovered in Europe at the end of the last century.
