What to do if you have a high temperature

If you or someone you care for has a fever, follow these steps to bring it down:

- Take your temperature and assess your symptoms. If your temperature is 38°C or Plus, you have a fever.
- Stay in bed and rest.
- Stay hydrated. Drink water, iced tea or very diluted Lemon juice to replenish fluids lost through perspiration. But if it's difficult to drink because of a sore throat, for example, suck on ice.
- Take paracetamol or ibuprofen to bring down the fever. Follow the recommended dosage and do not use them with other fever-reducing medicines. Do not give aspirin to babies or Children without first obtaining medical advice from a health professional. Infants under 6 months of age should not take ibuprofen under any circumstances.
- Remove extra layers of Textiles and blankets, unless you are shivering from the cold.
- Take a lukewarm Bath or put a cold glove on your forehead to make yourself feel better.

Plus, whatever your thermometer says, if you're worried or feeling too unwell, see your doctor. Having a fever is the Body's response to fighting infections caused by viruses or bacteria. A fever can also result from sunburn or vaccination. Anyone can get a fever, whatever their age. People with weakened Systems may tend to get fevers more often than others. To find out more about age-specific treatment guidelines and to understand your symptoms, it is always best to consult a health professional.

A healthy adult with a low-grade fever may feel like the worst of the worst, but a baby with a high-grade fever can sometimes feel quite comfortable. The opposite of the two scenarios can also occur. Fevers affect different people in different ways, and so do their symptoms. Your level of discomfort and your symptoms can help you decide how to treat the fever. If your high temperature is accompanied by a rash, you should seek medical advice. It's important that your doctor determines the underlying cause of the rash. Other symptoms, such as nausea or vomiting, may go away more quickly with appropriate medical care. If your fever rises above 39.5°C, you should seek urgent medical attention.
