What is reactional hair loss?
Reactive hair loss, also known astelogen effluvium, is a hair condition characterised by temporary and generally diffuse hair loss. This hair loss can be quite sudden, often resulting in noticeable hair loss over a period of weeks to months. The condition is called "reactive" because it is usually triggered by an event or situation that causes physical or emotional stress on the body.
Reactive hair loss is usually caused by a disruption in the normal hair growth cycle, where hair goes through phases of growth, rest and loss. Common triggers for this condition include stressful events such as major surgery, serious illness, severe emotional stress, childbirth or an unbalanced diet low in essential nutrients. These stressors can cause a higher than normal proportion of hair to enter a resting phase, after which it falls out, resulting in greater than usual hair loss. Be aware that reactive hair loss is temporary, and hair usually begins to grow back naturally once the stressor has been resolved or the body has adapted to the new situation. However, it can take several months for Capillary density to return to normal.
