What causes rheumatism?
Rheumatism, a term used to describe a variety of disorders affecting the joints, muscles and connective tissues, can have a variety of origins. One of the main causes is inflammation due to autoimmunity, where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, as in rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis, on the other hand, is often due to wear and tear of the cartilage that cushions the joints, generally linked to age or repeated use of certain joints.
Genetic factors also play a part, as certain genes can increase the risk of developing these diseases. In addition, specific infections can trigger reactions such as reactive arthritis, often following a bacterial infection elsewhere in the Body. Other known risk factors include environmental factors, such as smoking or exposure to chemicals, and certain metabolic conditions such as gout, which results from crystal deposits in the joints.
To prevent or treat rheumatism, it is best to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, and to follow treatments prescribed by a health professional to manage symptoms effectively and preserve quality of life.
