In which cases? Oral intake is generally used in adults and advised for digestive comfort and as general cleanser. This route of absorption is contraindicated in cases of gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer, esophageal reflux. Possible incompatibility with certain treatments. The medication should be taken 2 to 3 hours. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
How? Essential oils should never be put pure in the mouth. They are not soluble in water. Take them preferably in a teaspoonful of cooking oil (olive, sunflower ...) or mother tincture (in pharmacy). In some cases, it is advisable to place the drops on a piece of sugar or bread crumbs; Then drink a glass of water (lukewarm if possible).
By dermal application
Essential oils easily cross the skin to join the bloodstream. Their action is local or general. Some may be irritating and even dermocaustic: see the "Precautions" sections of the guide. In all cases, avoid sensitive areas and mucous membranes.
In which cases? Dermal application is suitable in many situations. It offers very nice possibilities for body and cosmetic care.
How? HEs are usually used in dilution in vegetable oil. You will apply them in massage, exceptionally in friction, either near the zone concerned, or on a nerve center (solar plexus, spine ...), or on a well vascularized zone: wrist, elbow or knee crease, feet ...
At atmospheric scattering
Some HE are used pure in an electric diffuser by cold atomization. This technique is the most effective to ensure the diffusion of essential oils. Without being heated, the HEs are projected into tiny droplets and disperse into the atmosphere (surface area of about 20 to 100 m 2 ). In this mode of use, most HEs are reserved for adults; The others are indicated only to children over 7 years.
In which cases? The atmospheric diffusion is particularly suitable for HEs with a sanitizing or relaxing aim. It is the ideal way to clean the rooms to live ... and to relax!
How? The diffusion is never carried out continuously. Recommended rate:
- in an empty room, 15 to 20 minutes two to three times a day;
- in an occupied room, 5 to 10 minutes every hour or every two hours.
Quantity for 24 hours: 20 to 30 drops (depending on the flow rate of the appliance).
Good to know: some HE exhaling an odor too strong (risk of headaches), are to diffuse in moderation, or in mixture with another.
Practical advice: do not forget to regularly clean the diffuser (risk of filling the nozzles).
In an olfactory environment
Pure HEs are also used for the pleasure associated with their perfume. In a regulated gentle electric diffuser, the molecules are not altered by inadvertent heating and retain all their olfactory qualities.
In this mode of use, HE can be used in the presence of children over 7 years of age.
In which cases? It is the way to pleasantly perfume your interior.
How? Never practice continuously. Recommended pace in a room: 30 minutes, two to three times a day.
Amount per sequence: 5 to 10 drops.
Practical advice: do not leave a HE for several days in the aroma diffuser because it could oxidize in contact with the air.
Inhalation
Aromatic molecules penetrate easily through the capillaries of the nasal mucous membrane; They intervene by the olfactory route. Wet inhalation is used especially for the comfort of the upper airways. This route is not recommended for children under 12 years of age, as well as for asthma, couperosis and facial irritation.
In which cases? Mainly for respiratory well-being and relaxation.
- Wet Inhalation: pour boiling water into a bowl, or better in an inhaler, adding 1 or 2 drops of EH; Breathe in steam for 5 minutes, closing eyes.
- Dry inhalation: pour a few drops on a handkerchief and place it under the nose (do not use it to blow your nose or wipe your eyes).
In facial sauna
For facials (especially in the case of oily skin), one proceeds as for a wet inhalation, over a bowl of hot water.
