Castor plants have been grown since ancient times - Cleopatra used to use it as a make-up remover! It was known as kiki/cici in Ancient Egypt and it has some astonishing properties. Castor oil contains over 86% ricinoleic acid and has been used to treat various ailments for over a quarter of a century. Known as a painkiller, anti inflammatory, anti bacterial agent and laxative, castor oil is widely used in cosmetics to look after eyelashes, hair and nails. It used to be used in lipsticks in our grandmothers' days, but it has since been replaced with mineral oils that spoil less quickly. Castor oil has almost no colour or scent, but its viscous texture stops it from being used over wide areas.
