1. Open the package carefully and remove the condom. Although strong, condoms can be damaged by sharp fingernails, jewellery or teeth. Never use more than one condom at a time. Always use a new condom for each partner and each sexual act (vaginal, oral or anal) to reduce the risk of HIV and STI transmission.
2. Always put the condom on the penis before any sexual contact and only when the penis is erect, with the rolled side on the outside. This will reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
3. The condom will only unroll in one direction. Do not unroll the condom before putting it on. Check that the rolled side is facing outwards.
4. Pinch the tip of the condom to remove any trapped air so it can collect semen. Excess air inside the condom can increase the risk of breakage.
5. Unroll the condom fully down the length of the penis to the base. If it doesn’t unroll easily, it may be inside out, damaged or expired. Discard it and use a new condom. If you feel the condom slipping or stretching, stop and check to avoid possible breakage.
6. Do not use oil-based lubricants (massage oils, body lotions, baby oil, butter, margarine, petroleum jelly, etc.) as they can damage latex condoms. Use only lubricants compatible with condoms. Some topical medications may also damage condoms — check with your doctor or pharmacist.
7. After sex, withdraw carefully while the penis is still erect. To avoid semen leakage, hold the condom at the base of the penis. Point the penis downward and remove the condom gently.
8. Tie the used condom in a knot and wrap it in tissue. Dispose of it hygienically in a bin. Do not flush it down the toilet.
