Native to Madagascar, this evergreen, highly aromatic tree can grow up to 5 m tall. In Malagasy, Mandravasarotra means "that keeps evil away". It is the plant most commonly used by people in the west of the island. In this Sakalava region, it is known either as Motrobeatiagnana or Motrobeatianina, meaning "big fire in the entrails", as its entire aerial part has a pungent, burning flavour. Depending on the Malagasy dialect, it is also known as Fanalamangidy "which removes bitterness" or Mangidymanitra "which smells of bitterness" or Sakarivohazo "ginger wood" or Sakaihazo "chilli wood".
In winter, apply a few drops of Mandravasarotra HECT to the chest, back and soles of the feet to boost your immune system.
