The importance of Omegas
Omegas are unsaturated fatty acids. A distinction is generally made between polyunsaturated fatty acids (omegas 3 & 6) and monounsaturated fatty acids (omegas 9). Each of them has specific properties within our bodies.
Linoleic acid (Omegas 6) is an essential fatty acid which plays a part in many of the body's functions (fertility, immunity and skin integrity).
Alpha-linoleic acid (omega 3) is an essential fatty acid because it is the precursor of DHA and EPA, essential fatty acids (not synthesised by the body)
Oleic acid (omega 9) is a monounsaturated fatty acid found in oils (olive, rapeseed) and plays a role in maintaining good cholesterol levels (HDL).
It's all about balance!
The modern diet contains too many Omegas 6 compared with Omegas 3. In fact, we consume up to 20 times more in the West! It is estimated that the optimal and beneficial ratio for health is 4/1 in favour of Omegas 6.
